Tell Your Legislator - STOP HB 2706!

HB 2706, an egregious anti-transgender bill, passed out of the House Health and Human Services Committee. While we were incredibly disappointed this invasive, harmful bill was passed through committee, this is not the end and we can stop this bill in the House, but your Representatives need to hear from you!

If passed, the bill would ban transgender athletes from participating on K-12 and college sports teams corresponding to their gender identity.

Together with our community partners and supporters, we can stop this bill in its tracks, but not without your voice. Tell your State Reps to STOP HB 2706!

Dear Representative,

As a resident of Arizona and a supporter of the Human Rights Campaign, I am writing with grave concern about House Bill 2706. If passed, this bill would ban transgender athletes from participating on K-12 and college sports teams corresponding to their gender identity. It is a solution to a problem that does not exist.

Transgender students, like all students, can benefit from being part of sports, and allowing them to participate in athletic activities consistent with their gender identity in no way disadvantages their fellow students. Transgender girls are girls, transgender women are women, and transgender boys and men are boys and men. Attempting to separate transgender youth from their peers is impractical, unfair, and unnecessary.

This bill offers an invasive, impractical approach to separating transgender students from their peers that is as unwieldy as it is unnecessary. The idea that a youth should be subjected to invasive examination, testing, and analysis – which is unscientific and contrary to medical best practice – is repugnant. Should a transgender youth not be out as such to their peers, teachers, or potential coach, the school would be in the position of having to violate the youth’s medical privacy and outing the youth to the coach, athletic association, teammates, and parents, in contravention of medical privacy laws, professional standards, and other regulations.
Not only is this bill a solution in search of a problem, it isn’t even a solution – it is just a problem.

Please reject HB 2706 before it’s too late. Thank you for your time and consideration.
