Urge Your Virginia Legislators to Vote YES on Pro-Equality Legislation!

A historic slate of pro-LGBTQ bills is moving through the Virginia General Assembly!

These critical bills will: protect LGBTQ Virginians from discrimination in housing, employment, public accomodations and credit, protect LGBTQ youth from so-called conversion therapy, protect transgender students in public schools, and modernize the process for transgender people updating their gender marker on identity documents such as birth certificates and drivers licenses. We could not have accomplished these promising successes without your support during the 2019 elections.

Dear Senator and Delegate,

As your constituent and a supporter of the Human Rights Campaign, I’m urging you to vote YES in support of historic pro-LGBTQ legislation that has been introduced and is advancing in the General Assembly. These critical bills will: protect LGBTQ Virginians from discrimination in housing, employment, public accomodations and credit, protect LGBTQ youth from so-called conversion therapy, protect transgender students in public schools, and modernize the process for transgender people updating their gender marker on identity documents such as birth certificates and drivers licenses.

I urge you to support the following pro-equality legislative agenda:

Bills to end discrimination:

- SB 868 (Ebbin/Boysko) and HB 1663 (Sickles)- Also known as the Virginia Values Act this bill would prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity in housing,  employment, credit and public accomodations.

- HB 1429 (Roem)- Prohibits a health insurance carrier from denying or limiting coverage to a transgender individual on the basis of the fact that the individual's sex assigned at birth, gender identity, or gender otherwise recorded is different from the one to which such health services are ordinarily or exclusively available.

Bills to protect LGBTQ youth:

- SB 161 (Boysko) and HB 145 (Simon)- Requires the Department of Education to develop and make available to each school board model policies regarding the treatment of transgender students in primary and secondary schools no later than December 31, 2020.

- SB 245 (Surovell) and HB 386 (Hope)- Prohibits state-licensed healthcare providers from engaging in the dangerous, discredited practice of conversion therapy with minors.

Bills to update identity documents:

- SB 657 (Boysko) and HB 1041 (Simon)- Removes unnecessary and invasive requirements that prohibit many transgender residents from correcting the gender marker on their birth certificate.

- SB 246 (Surovell)- Adds a non-binary gender marker option on state driver’s licenses and IDs for transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming Virginians.

Bills to build safer communities:

-HB 1058 (Kory) and HB 276 (Sullivan) - Requires the reporting of hate crimes based on sexual orientation and gender identity along with other protected characteristics.

Our Commonwealth should be a place where no one is denied the opportunity to work and build a life for themselves because of who they are.

Please vote YES on the above pro-LGBTQ bills and help our Commonwealth be an inclusive and welcoming place for ALL Virginians!
