Urgent: Help Stop Anti-LGBTQ Bills from Advancing in Texas!

SB 17, a bill that would allow state-sanctioned discrimination against many groups including LGBTQ Texans, has passed the Senate and is now headed to the a hearing in the House State Affairs Committee.

Send a message to House State Affairs Committee members telling them that you oppose SB 17 because it allows discriminations against all Texans, including LGBTQ Texans.

Dear Representative,

As a supporter of equality - and the Human Rights Campaign - I am writing today to ask that you oppose SB 17, one of the most broadly discriminatory bills under consideration in the country. SB 17 is a bill that would allow state-sanctioned discrimination against LGBTQ Texans and many other groups.

Freedom of religion is a cornerstone of American society, and for that freedom to be a reality it is imperative that religious belief be protected – but that is not what SB 17 accomplishes.  Rather, SB 17 undermines the legitimacy of all state licensing and professional regulation by allowing professional licensees to assert religious justifications to refuse to comply with these critical licensing and professional regulations.

In Texas, SB 17 applies to the more than 200 professions require professional licensing so that consumers are assured that the professional has the requisite skills and training and will be held accountable to those standards. Licensees include teachers, fire fighters, doctors, architects, funeral directors, building inspectors, social workers, counselors, psychologists, therapists, judges, veterinarians, pipefitters, auditors, surgeons, and so many more.

SB 17 is blatantly discriminatory. Efforts to pass anti-LGBTQ legislation harm all Texans.

Please oppose SB 17.
