STOP THE DOJ: Hands Off Our Healthcare!

Defend Our Healthcare Privacy. The Trump DOJ Is Demanding Private Medical Records of Trans Youth. We Must Fight Back.

What's Happening

On May 7, 2026, the Trump administration's Department of Justice issued a grand jury subpoena to NYU Langone Health — demanding the private medical records of transgender youth patients and the names of their doctors.

This is the first known criminal subpoena targeting a healthcare institution for providing medically necessary care to trans young people. But NYU Langone isn't alone — there is indication that other institutions have received similar grand jury subpoenas with nearly two dozen hospitals and clinics across the country having already received administrative investigative subpoenas for health records, including facilities in California, Colorado, the District of Colombia, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Washington State.

The subpoena demands records of minors under 18 who received gender-affirming care between 2020 and 2026. It demands the names of medical providers who cared for these young people. It treats compassionate, evidence-based healthcare as if it were a crime.

This is your neighbor's medical records. Your child's doctor. Your family's private health information — now in the crosshairs of federal prosecutors operating out of Texas, targeting patients, their families and doctors in New York.

What We Are Demanding

We will not stand by while the federal government criminalizes compassionate care and invades the privacy of our families. HRC will use this petition in our advocacy with attorneys general, governors, hospital administrators and members of Congress.

We call on public officials to publicly condemn these subpoenas and use every legal tool available to block compliance and defend patient privacy.

We call on all healthcare institutions to stand with your patients and publicly commit to defending their privacy and the providers who care for them. They should refuse to comply with these subpoenas to the fullest extent allowed by law.

We demand the U.S. Department of Justice immediately withdraw all grand jury subpoenas targeting healthcare providers for offering this evidence-based, medically necessary care and end the weaponization of federal law enforcement against transgender people and their doctors.
