The new term for Congress only just began and the attacks on the LGBTQ+ community are already coming. Instead of focusing on the pressing issues facing our country like the cost of housing and health care, the Senate are expected to vote any day on a nationwide ban on trans kids participating in school sports.

It’s despicable that the anti-equality congressional majority is prioritizing this discriminatory legislation that benefits no one and only harms children..

As your constituent and a supporter of the Human Rights Campaign, I’m asking you to oppose the so-called Protection of Women and Girls in Sports Act, a bill that would ban trans student athletes from participating in sports consistent with their gender identity. With all of the pressing issues our country is facing, singling out a tiny number of students should not be the focus.

School sports are supposed to be about building healthy habits, having fun, and learning how to be part of a team. Transgender students deserve the same chances as other students to learn teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership and self-discipline, and to build a sense of belonging with their peers. There are sports associations in every state and at every level of competition, and many already have policies in place that allow transgender youth to play in an equitable way with no issues. Our families don’t need Congress stepping in to decide which kids belong on which teams.

This bill will do nothing to address the actual issues facing our country, but it will harm trans students who are just trying to play sports with their friends. Please oppose any attempt to forbid transgender students from being able to play school sports with their peers.
