Act now to safeguard the health and well-being of transgender people in Ohio!

The Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services needs to hear from you this week. At the direction of Governor Mike DeWine, the Department has proposed regulations that would add draconian new hurdles for transgender people — of any age — who attempt to access health care related to their transition anywhere in the state. These regulations would create onerous requirements targeting transition-related care that will eliminate available resources. They would even require that hospitals create detailed plans for detransitioning patients to be allowed to diagnose gender dysphoria or provide transition-related care at all.

Please join the Human Rights Campaign in opposing this new rule by submitting your comment today. We need comments from people like you opposing this proposal to outpace any comments supporting these requirements that our opponents will submit.

Please select a few talking points below to personalize your draft comment below:

  • Decisions about a young person’s health care should be made by the young person’s parents in consultation with their doctor according to guidelines set by doctors, not politicians.
  • Every credible medical organization — representing over 1.3 million doctors in the United States — supports gender-affirming care for transgender and non-binary people.
  • This is why majorities of Americans oppose criminalizing or banning gender-affirming care.
  • Hospitals across the Buckeye State already work to ensure this type of care is delivered in an age-appropriate manner and made in consultation with medical and mental health professionals AND parents.
  • Being transgender is not new. Gender transition is a personal process that can include changing clothes, names, and hairstyles to fit a person’s gender identity. And in many cases, gender-affirming care is lifesaving.
