Act Now! Tell legislators to stop targeting LGBTQ+ kids in Louisiana!

We are appalled by the callousness of the extremist legislators in Louisiana who went out of their way to suspend the rules and push through this dangerous legislation. Now, they are voting to override Gov. Edward’s veto of HB 648, HB 466, and HB 81. We need to demand that LA legislators stop these shameful attacks on LGBTQ+ youth in Louisiana!

As a proud Louisianan and a supporter of the Human Rights Campaign, Louisiana Trans Advocates, and Forum for Equality, I am writing to urge you to listen to the facts and sustain the veto of HB 648, HB 466, and HB 81!

HB 648 is a Gender-Affirming Care Ban that was shamefully revived by extremist legislators. It would ban physicians from providing medically necessary, age-appropriate, best practice health care for transgender minors under the age of 18. This bill contradicts guidelines recommended by every major medical association. This lifesaving healthcare has been proven to significantly lower anxiety, depression, and suicidality among transgender youth. HB 466 prevents students and educators across the state from having and providing safe, inclusive classrooms. It will block teachers from talking about LGBTQ+ issues or people in grades K-12, further stigmatizing LGBTQ+ people and isolating LGBTQ+ kids. LGBTQ+ people proudly exist across Louisiana, and we are part of America’s past, present, and future. Refusing to acknowledge our existence doesn’t change any of that.

HB 81 allows schools to forcibly out and intentionally misgender transgender and non-binary students, stripping affirming parents of their rights. All students have a right to be treated with dignity and respect at school. Using a student’s pronouns is life-saving and a basic form of respect. Research shows that supportive school environments lead to better outcomes for students. Forcibly outing students is dangerous, especially given that homelessness and violence disproportionately affect queer youth.

I strongly urge you to sustain Gov. Edward’s veto of HB 648, HB 466, and HB 81. Stop this desperate and cruel effort by radical politicians in Louisiana to marginalize and erase the LGBTQ+ community, particularly transgender youth.
